Cost of Online College Education in U.S.

A web-based bachelor’s degree program offers advantages such as an exclusive learning environment, flexible hours, the opportunity to work full time, convenience, and more. But what about the cost? However, we provide you detailed information about the cost of online college education in the U.S.

As per U.S. News, the average total tuition cost of an online bachelor’s degree program in the U.S. varies from about $38,500 to about $60,600. The average tuition cost at public degree programs for within-state students is around $38,500 and for outside-of-state learners, it is approximately $54,180. The tuition cost at private institutions is about $60,600.

To compare online college costs, you should consider points like your relation to the college, the chances of getting financial aid, and the expense of online versus on-campus education. Experts caution that since there is a lot of variety in the pricing structure of online colleges, students should be careful while evaluating costs.

Some online institutions charge by the credit hour and some levy a flat rate for the entire semester. If a program publicizes a ‘sticker price’, you need to be extra careful and check its credentials and legitimacy before enrolling.

Costs of On-Campus vs. Online Bachelor’s Degree

You should compare the costs of on-campus and online bachelor’s degree programs to know where you stand. This is because some online bachelor’s degree programs are more expensive than on-campus ones. Among 170 surveyed public colleges, the average price of tuition of a web-based bachelor’s degree for in-district, in-state learners is about $315 each credit for 2019-20. In comparison, the average tuition cost for on-campus, in-state learners is about $310 each credit, among 93 surveyed colleges.

At private colleges, the average price per credit for web-based programs is about $490 at 168 surveyed colleges. This is much less than the cost for on-campus degree programs which is about $1,250 at 113 surveyed private colleges.

The costs of online vs. on-campus programs depend on the program and college. For instance, at Iowa’s Simpson College, the per-credit cost for a web-based bachelor’s degree is about $415 which is more than the $397 per credit price for an at-campus bachelor’s program, as per data obtained from  U.S. News.

Some public universities also have higher fees for online education compared to on-campus programs. For example, at Oregon State University, the cost of in-state, on-campus tuition is about $210 each credit which is less than the cost of around $310 each credit for in-state online tuition.

Besides tuition, on-campus programs have other costs such as living expenses on campus, meal plans, textbooks, etc. Online programs can have technology costs, but students can save on some on-campus expenses like recreational and health services fees. Thus, we gave you a brief explanation of the cost of online college education in the U.S.
